Battlefield 6 ELR-40: Season 5's Long-Range Bolt-Action Sniper
The ELR-40 is Battlefield 6's new Season 5 sniper rifle with the furthest sweet spot in the game — here's the ammo choice, build, and lane-holding tips.
The ELR-40 arrived with Season 5: Siege of Vegas on October 13, and it’s the season’s bolt-action star. It’s free — Tier 5 on the Recruit battle pass path, no purchase needed — and it does one thing better than anything else in the game: reach out.
What makes it different
EA describes the ELR-40 as having the strongest bullet drag performance and the furthest sweet spot in its weapon archetype. Translated out of press-release language:
- The sweet spot band — the range where a body shot is a one-shot kill — sits further out than any other sniper. You get one-shot kills at distances where the M2010 ESR needs a headshot.
- Bullets drop less across those distances, so your holdover is more forgiving on moving targets.
- The custom single-shot ammo option flips the whole gun. Equip it and the sweet spot shifts to close range — a classic Battlefield feature that long-time players will recognise from earlier titles. One ammo choice turns the ELR from a lane-holder into a surprising close-quarters option.
That ammo swap is the real hook. No other Season 5 weapon changes its personality that dramatically.
Where it fits
- Best range: long. Hold ridgelines, desert crossing points and the open sightlines on Area 51 — a map that seems designed for this rifle.
- With custom ammo: it becomes a mid-range bully. Still not an SMG, but the closer sweet spot changes how aggressive you can be.
- Worst situation: getting rushed with no escape route. Every sniper’s problem, and the ELR’s slow handling makes it worse.
Building it
As of Season 5, the community direction is straightforward:
- Ammunition is the real decision. Default rounds for pure long-range; custom single-shot rounds if you’re playing closer. Nothing else on the gun matters as much as this choice.
- Barrel: long barrel for velocity — the gun already has the best drag in class, this pushes further.
- Optic: high magnification, 6x and up. You’re using the range; use the glass.
- Bipod wherever it’s available, for holding angles without fighting sway.
Who should run it
- Recon players who like patience over mobility. See the Recon guide and the sniper guide for the broader playstyle.
- Area 51 and Mirak Valley regulars. Open maps are where this rifle earns its battle pass slot.
- Players who miss classic Battlefield sniping. The custom-ammo sweet spot trick is exactly the kind of old-school flexibility the series was known for.
For a faster, more aggressive marksman option, the M2010 ESR remains the alternative. Full rankings in the weapon tier list.
