Battlefield 6 RSPR: Season 5's Rifle-Flavored SMG, Explained

The RSPR is Battlefield 6's new Season 5 SMG with rifle DNA — here's how it plays, where it fits, and the attachment direction that tames its recoil.

The RSPR landed with Season 5: Siege of Vegas on October 13, and it’s one of the four new weapons headlining the season. It’s free — you unlock it at Tier 11 of the Access Defied battle pass path, no premium pass required — and it fills a gap the SMG class has had since launch.

What it actually is

EA describes the RSPR as an SMG with rifle characteristics: a steady rate of fire, high damage per round, a small magazine, and noticeably stronger recoil than a standard SMG. The community shorthand is that it performs somewhere between the SG 553R and the SCW-10.

In practice that means:

  • It reaches further than a pure SMG without pretending to be a carbine.
  • It hits harder than the SCW-10 but won’t out-shoot a carbine at 60 metres.
  • The small magazine and recoil are the price of that middle ground.

Where it fits

  • Best range: 15 to 40 metres. That awkward mid-band where SMGs start losing and rifles feel clunky.
  • Too close: it still works, but the SCW-10’s handling and mag size win room fights.
  • Too far: past 40 metres you’re fighting the recoil and the damage dropoff at the same time. Take a carbine instead.
  • Best maps: mixed-range infantry maps where engagements happen at the edge of SMG range — think Empire State and Saints Quarter rather than wide-open Mirak Valley.

Handling the recoil

This is the part that decides whether the gun works for you:

  • Burst it. Holding the trigger through a mag dumps rounds into the sky. Three-to-five-round bursts keep it on target.
  • Respect the magazine. The small mag means you reload more than you’re used to with an SMG. Reload behind cover, never mid-push.
  • Pre-aim corners. With rifle-like damage, whoever’s on target first usually wins — you don’t get many body-shot seconds.

Attachment direction

As of Season 5 the RSPR is too new for a settled meta build, so build for its weaknesses:

  • Muzzle: a recoil-control brake or compensator first. This is the non-negotiable core of the build.
  • Barrel: compact-to-mid length for handling on infantry maps; step up to a longer barrel only if you’re playing bigger maps.
  • Underbarrel: vertical or stubby grip depending on how much climb you’re fighting.
  • Magazine: extended mags are tempting, but watch the handling cost — the gun’s whole identity is mobility.
  • Optic: 1x to 1.5x. You don’t need magnification for the ranges it works at.

Who should run it

  • Engineer players who keep losing mid-range trades with a pure SMG — SMGs are the class weapon, covered in the Engineer guide.
  • Aggressive players on mixed-range maps who want rifle damage with SMG tempo.
  • Anyone bored of the SCW-10 but not ready to commit to a full carbine grind.
