Exiled Survivors: Reaper Boss Guide
The Reaper is the telegraphed slasher of Exiled Survivors. How to read the tells, punish the whiffs, and stop dying to the second slash.
The Reaper is the classic learn-the-tell fight. A fast melee boss with telegraphed slashes, and the whole encounter is a test of whether you read animations or panic-dodge. Once you know the tells, it is free — until the second slash catches you.
The framework
The Reaper’s kit is built on commitment:
- Telegraphed slashes. Every big swing has a wind-up. The tell is your entire defense — see it, and the attack is not a threat.
- Combination chains. The second slash is the one that kills. Players walk out of the first attack and get clipped by the follow-up because they re-engaged a beat too early.
- Fast closes. It covers ground quickly, which punishes builds that need distance but cannot maintain it.
Exact move timings and phase counts are not fully documented — check in-game; the stage bosses guide has the encounter overview.
Positioning
- Kite, do not tank. This is not a fight for melee-only builds. If your whole kit is standing next to things, the Reaper wins.
- Walk out, then wait. Leave the first slash’s arc, then hold position through the wind-up of the second. Committing early is the classic death.
- Punish the whiff. After a big swing misses, there is a recovery window — that is where your damage goes. Automatic skills keep firing while you kite (see the skill system guide).
Build priorities
- Movement Focus. Kiting is the fight; movement is the stat. The Focus passives guide covers the tiers.
- Damage while moving. Ranged and automatic skills over stand-still casts.
- One single-target skill for the recovery windows.
- Damage direction in the damage types guide; full builds in the build compendium.
Common wipe causes
- Panic-dodging into the second slash. The number one loss. Walk out of the first attack instead of rolling through it.
- Melee-only play. If your build requires adjacency, this fight teaches you that lesson the hard way.
- Re-engaging a beat early. The recovery window opens after the full combination, not after the first swing.
- Low movement investment. Fast melee bosses convert slow players into stationary targets.
The one thing to remember
The Reaper is the game’s cleanest mechanics check: no build fixes bad tells, and good tells fix mediocre builds. Learn the animation, respect the chain, and the fight becomes a damage race you already know how to win. This is the same discipline Mephistopheles will demand at lord level.
