Exiled Survivors Build Compendium: Four Archetypes That Clear
The four Exiled Survivors build archetypes — sustained AoE, single-target burst, summon/synergy and sustain — and how to assemble each one from skills, energy slots and Focus passives.
Every strong Exiled Survivors build is the same three-slot puzzle: a main damage skill, an energy skill, and a stack of Focus passives that feed one damage type. The skill system guide explains the slots; this page is about what to put in them.
The rules before the archetypes
Commit to one damage type. This is not optional past the opening zone. Eight flavors exist, and mixing them means every passive you take is half as good. Full breakdown in the damage types guide.
Feed it Focus tiers. Focus passives are the multiplier, not the bonus. The Focus passives guide covers the tiers; the short version is that you take every tier for your element before you take anything else.
One horde tool, one boss tool. Every archetype needs both; builds with only one stall in the middle zones.
1. Sustained AoE
Persistent ground effects — fire vortices, blizzard clouds, poison miasma, mycelium networks — stacked until the screen is lethal floor.
- Best with: frost and poison. Both buy time while damage accumulates.
- Energy slot: something that buys space when a pack closes in, not more damage.
- Passives: duration and area before raw damage. Coverage wins.
- Struggles against: summoners and armored bosses — bring a second answer.
- Fits: any character with defensive or control-leaning traits.
2. Single-target burst
Front-loaded damage that deletes a priority target in a window.
- Best with: physical and bleeding. Bleed stacks are how burst builds handle bosses that outlive the burst.
- Energy slot: a cooldown-reset or damage-amp you hold for the boss phase. See the energy skills guide.
- Passives: crit and damage multipliers over coverage.
- Struggles against: sheer volume. Pack clear is your weak side; patch it early or you never reach the boss.
- Fits: melee and high-damage-trait characters — cross-check the best characters guide.
3. Summon / synergy
Minions, marks and chain effects that scale off each other rather than off your raw stats.
- Best with: curse and nature. Curse marks pulse and spread when marked enemies die; nature roots things in place while the swarm works.
- Energy slot: anything that groups enemies, so your chains have targets.
- Passives: effect-spread and mark duration.
- Struggles against: early game. Build an AoE core first, then transition.
- Fits: characters with summon or debuff traits.
4. Sustain / attrition
Outlive everything. Damage over time plus healing and mitigation, winning on the clock rather than on burst.
- Best with: poison, burning and bleeding — all three tick while you reposition.
- Energy slot: a heal or a defensive cooldown.
- Passives: survival first, damage second. You are winning by not dying.
- Struggles against: damage-race bosses whose zones accumulate. The Plague Doctor type punishes slow clears.
- Fits: tanky traits, and it is the safest archetype for Hard mode.
Relic and equipment priority
Specific relic names and drop rates are not fully documented — check in-game. The priority order: your damage type → survivability → utility. Skip relics that add a second damage type you have not invested in; they dilute your Focus tiers. Equipment works the same way.
Rank skill picks against the skills tier list, then take the Nine Circles as the exam for whichever archetype you built.
