TF2 Heavy: The Best Loadout, Tested
Minigun, Sandvich, or Shotgun? Tomislav or Brass Beast? The best Heavy loadout for 2026 with the exact situations where each weapon wins.
Heavy has more weapon choices than any class, and most of them are traps. The strongest loadout is boring — it is the one that keeps your damage high and your survivability consistent — but knowing when to break from it is what separates a good Heavy from one who dies holding the wrong weapon.
The default: Minigun, Shotgun, Fists of Steel
Primary: Minigun. The stock Minigun has the highest damage-per-second in the game. The Tomislav fires 20% faster but does 20% less damage per bullet, which cancels out to roughly the same DPS with better accuracy — it feels better at long range, but the accuracy is not worth the spin-up penalty when most fights happen at mid-range. The Brass Beast is a defensive monster, but the 20% slower movement makes you a target for Spies and Soldiers who jump you.
Run stock until you are deliberately holding a chokepoint. Then switch.
Secondary: Shotgun. The Shotgun is the answer to “What is Heavy’s best secondary?” more often than any alternative. It fires while moving, it costs nothing to spin, and it finishes enemies who retreat from the minigun. The Sandvich is food — great for surviving a bad fight, useless when the enemy is shooting you now. The Dalokohs Bar gives overheal, which is genuinely good on defense, but you cannot eat under pressure.
The Shotgun is the only secondary that works in every fight. Use it as the default and keep the Sandvich equipped when you are the team’s only health source.
Melee: Fists of Steel. 40% damage reduction while deployed — the highest in the game. It turns Sentry nests from certain death into a fight you can win. The Warrior’s Spirit and Killing Gloves of Style are fun; the Fists of Steel are functional. The only real alternative is the KGB for crit-cuddling with a Medic pocket, which is a specific strategy, not a default.
The map-by-map swaps
Long sightlines (ctf_2fort, plr_hightower): Tomislav. The accuracy bonus finally pays off when enemies are 800 units away, and you can suppress Snipers without a full spin-up.
Chokepoint defense (pl_badwater last, koth_viaduct): Brass Beast. You are not moving anyway. The extra resistance means the enemy team needs a second Soldier to kill you, and second Soldiers take time to arrive.
Aggressive pushing (payload attack): Shotgun and stock Minigun. You need mobility more than resistance. Eat the Sandvich between pushes, not during them.
Spy-heavy servers (casual Valve servers, always): Fists of Steel. Spy is the class that kills you most often, and the Fists of Steel turn a backstab-adjacent revolver fight into one you win.
The positioning that matters more than the loadout
Heavy dies to the same three things regardless of loadout: Snipers at long range, Soldiers from above, and Spies from behind. The weapons cannot fix any of them.
- Fight at mid-range. Too close, and Scouts circle you. Too far, and Snipers headshot you.
- Never push alone. A Heavy without a Medic is a Heavy with a timer on him.
- Turn around. Every Heavy death is a Spy death. Spin the camera while firing.
- Use corners, not open ground. Peek, fire, retreat. Your health pool is large but not infinite.
The one thing to remember
Stock everything. The Minigun out-damages its replacements, the Shotgun out-ranges your melee, and the Fists of Steel out-survive the alternatives. Swap only when the map or the enemy team forces it — and when you do, know exactly which fight you are trading away.
