Rocket League Boost Management: Small Pads, Big Pads, and When to Grab Them

Boost is a limited resource and most players waste it. Learn the 100-pad vs 12-pad economy, the corner rotation, and why grabbing small pads your teammate needs is throwing the game.

Boost feels infinite when you are new and painfully scarce in close games. Managing it is a skill, not luck. Here is the economy.

The two pad types

  • Big pads (100 boost): the large rectangular pads in the four corners and the center of the map. These are the backbone of your boost supply.
  • Small pads (12 boost): the little round pads scattered around. They top you up but never fully refill.

A common mistake: driving across the map to a big pad while ignoring the small pads right next to the play. Small pads keep you functional between big-pad runs.

Corner rotation = free boost

Good players run a predictable corner boost route: after you are beaten on a play, you rotate through the nearest corner big pad on your way back to defense. You recover and refuel in one arc. You should almost never be driving back to goal on empty if you use corners.

Don’t steal your teammate’s pad

This is the boost mistake that loses games at every rank below Champion. If your teammate is closer to a big pad and heading for it, do not cut in front and grab it. You both end up short, and the opponent punishes the gap. Communicate with positioning: the deeper player takes the pad they are already near; the attacker grabs what is on the attack path.

Spend boost on what wins

  • Aerials and fast aerials eat boost — but they win games, so spend there when the ball is live.
  • Recovery (getting back to defense) is the highest-value boost use. An empty tank when the opponent counters = a goal against.
  • Showboating (needless flips, driving in circles) is the lowest-value use. Stop it.

How much is “enough”?

You rarely need a full 100. For most defensive rotations, 30–50 is plenty to make the clear. Save the big pads for when you are about to attack or aerial. Hoarding 100 boost while your teammate is on 12 is not “smart,” it is just selfish.

Rule of thumb: grab small pads on the way, take the corner big pad on recovery, and never leave your teammate starved. Boost discipline alone can carry you a full rank.
