TF2 Trickstab Guide: The Named Techniques, Step by Step
Trickstabs are a last-resort Spy move, not your main attack. Here are the real named trickstabs — Stairstab, Matador, Cornerstab, Dropstab, Topstab, Quickstab — with the exact inputs, the 180-degree backstab arc, and where to practice them on tr_walkway.
A backstab is an instant kill on any class at any health, and it lands inside a generous 180-degree arc behind the target — not a pixel-perfect line, but you do need to be at their back. A trickstab is what happens when the enemy has already spotted you and you use movement and map geometry to get back into that 180-degree arc anyway.
The whole trick relies on one fact: when a player realizes a Spy is behind them, they spin to face you. During that turn — and for a beat after — their back is exposed. Your knife also has a short lunge and a raised-knife windup, so the kill can register a hair after you’ve slid around them. Trickstabs are a panic play for when you’ve been found. Treat them as your exit, not your opener.
The five trickstabs you should actually learn
1. Stairstab — learn this first. Run up a staircase or ramp with a single enemy chasing close behind. At the top, turn ~180 degrees and crouch-jump (the crouch lifts your feet and gives clearance) so you arc over their head and land behind them. Airstrafe slightly around them on the way down — you are not jumping straight over, you are arcing around. Land in their back, click. Best against one overzealous chaser; experienced players read it, so don’t rely on it in ranked.
2. Matador — the most useful one. Backpedal toward the enemy so they charge straight at you (the “bull”). Just before melee range, strafe hard to one side with the movement key without turning your mouse yet. Their forward momentum carries them past you; then whip your mouse the direction you strafed and you are facing their now-exposed back. Click. Works best on slow, committed classes (Heavy, Soldier, Demo, Engineer) who swing at where you were.
3. Cornerstab — the most reliable. Lure a pursuer toward a sharp 90-degree corner. Duck tightly into the wall on the other side so they assume you kept running straight. Let them fully round the corner and run past you, then turn and stab. The single most common beginner mistake is stabbing too early — the rule of thumb is to wait about one second at the corner unless they are practically on top of you.
4. Dropstab — the hardest to see coming. Wait on a high ledge, then drop onto the enemy’s head while holding crouch, landing behind them for the stab before you touch the ground. Because it comes from above and arrives in their blind spot, it is the most reliable trickstab in the game. Classic spot: drop from Badwater’s roof onto the cart at the second point. Practice it anywhere with real verticality.
5. Topstab — for turtling Engineers. Some Engineers sit with their back to a corner, Sentry and Dispenser in front, thinking they are safe. Climb onto their Dispenser or Sentry, stand on their head, face the same direction they face and crouch until the knife-raises, then backstab. The raised-knife animation is your tell that the angle is correct.
Two more worth knowing: the Quickstab (let an unaware enemy run past you, then spin and hit their retreating back — one of the few reliable ways to stab a Scout) and the Circlestrafe stab (for enemies who strafe or backpedal and won’t fall for a matador — you cut across their strafing path and sidestab instead).
Who to trickstab, and who to avoid
Trickstabs need a target that turns slowly: Heavy, Soldier, Demoman, Engineer, Medic. Avoid:
- Scout — turns and strafes instantly, will stab you back.
- Pyro — airblasts you out of your arc; also spy-checks constantly.
- Sniper with the SMG — fast turn, and he may already be tracking you.
Always confirm the target is alone first. The most common “failed” trickstab is a perfect Matador on the Heavy followed by the Pyro behind him airblasting you into a wall.
Where to practice
Do not learn this in live matches. Load tr_walkway_rc2 (a community map, drop it in tf/maps and run map tr_walkway_rc2 from the console). Set the bots to walk forward at normal speed and grind the stairstab jump height, the matador strafe distance, and the cornerstab timing until they are muscle memory. Hours here beats a thousand failed attempts in Casual.
The one thing to remember
A trickstab is a backstab you earned after being seen — you bait a turn, slide into the 180-degree arc, and click. Learn Stairstab, Matador, and Cornerstab first, practice them on tr_walkway_rc2, and only pull them when you have already been spotted. Used as an escape, they are devastating. Used as your main plan, they are how Spies feed.
