How to Beat Spy in TF2: Spy-Checking and Defense Guide
Spies are killing your team and nobody sees them coming. This guide covers how to spy-check, how each class defends itself, and how to make your base hostile to infiltrators.
Every TF2 player has had the same experience: you are doing your job, and then you are dead, killed by someone you never saw. Spy is the class that creates that experience, and the only defense is habit.
This guide covers the habits that keep Spies out of your base, class by class.
How Spy actually works
Understanding the mechanics makes the counterplay obvious.
Spies cloak. They become invisible for a few seconds and make a distinct sound when they decloak. Learn that sound. It is the single most useful audio cue in the game.
Spies disguise. They look like your teammates. The disguise breaks when they attack, and when they touch an enemy Pyro’s flames.
Spies backstab from behind. One stab kills any class. From the front or side, the knife does almost nothing.
Spies sap buildings. A sapped Sentry is disabled instantly.
Every one of those mechanics has a counter.
The universal habits
1. Turn around periodically. Especially after you kill someone. Spies strike right after you are distracted.
2. Listen for the decloak. It is loud and unmistakable. If you hear it, turn and shoot.
3. Watch for unnatural teammates. A disguised Spy cannot shoot you without breaking disguise, but he can stand next to you. If an enemy is standing in a spot that makes no sense — behind your lines, next to your Sentry, staring at you — shoot him once. Friendly fire does not hurt teammates, so a single shot costs nothing and kills a Spy instantly.
4. Do not stand still facing one direction. Snipers scope for minutes. Medics heal in place. Both are Spy targets. If you must stand still, check behind you constantly.
Class-specific defense
Engineer: Your buildings are Spy targets. Keep the Sentry between you and suspicious players, wrench any sapper immediately, and shoot enemy teammates who walk up to your nest. A Spy disguised as your own team is still an enemy — your weapons do full damage to him.
Medic: Your biggest threat. Spies wait for you to be distracted, then backstab while you are healing. Stay behind your pocket, not beside him, and never stop moving when your pocket dies.
Sniper: You cannot see behind you while scoped. After every shot, unscope and check. If you hear a decloak, turn and use the SMG — quickscope does not help at knife range.
Heavy: You turn slowly and your attention is forward. Have a teammate watch your back, and when someone yells “Spy!”, release the trigger and turn immediately.
Pyro: You are Spy’s hard counter. Spy-check by burning every teammate who comes close. A Spy who touches your flames catches fire and loses his disguise. This is annoying for your team and essential for your survival.
Scout: You are Spy’s easiest victim because he one-shots you. When deep in enemy territory, check behind you every few seconds. If a decloak sounds, turn and Scattergun.
Soldier and Demoman: Your explosives do splash damage — fire at suspicious teammates’ feet. If it is a Spy, he dies. If it is a teammate, you take the self-damage, which is a small price.
Sniper’s Jarate and Pyro’s flames both break disguises without a shot, which is why experienced teams run them against Spy-heavy teams.
Making your base hostile
If your team is losing to one Spy, change the environment:
- Do not spread out. A Spy picks off isolated players. Stay in pairs.
- Voice every sighting. “Spy behind” takes two seconds to type and saves a life.
- Guard the Engineer. Most Spies target the nest, because a sapped Sentry ends a defensive hold. One player watching the Engineer’s back shuts down half the Spy’s options.
- Check the usual routes. Every map has flank paths Spies use. Learn them, and you will start recognizing when someone is about to appear.
How to tell a disguised Spy from a real enemy
It is harder than it sounds, but there are tells:
- Enemies cannot shoot each other. If you see two “enemies” standing next to each other doing nothing, one is a Spy.
- Disguises do not change your name display settings — enemy names normally show through walls at close range on many servers. If a “teammate” has no name tag, be suspicious.
- Spies cannot use the enemy team’s chat or voice. A disguised Spy who types in team chat is instantly revealed, which is why good Spies stay silent.
- Watch the movement. Disguised Spies often run where no enemy would — toward your spawn, away from the fight.
When a Spy is dominating
If one Spy is killing your team repeatedly, do not just get angry. Change something:
- Switch to Pyro. One competent Pyro makes a Spy’s life miserable.
- Group up. Spies farm isolated players.
- Guard the high-value targets. Medics and Engineers first.
- Accept the trade. Sometimes killing the Spy costs you the fight anyway. Reposition instead of chasing him into his territory.
The one-sentence version
Turn around. The Spy is not behind the enemy team — he is behind you.
