Octane in Rocket League: Why It's the Default for a Reason

Why the Octane is the best all-around car in Rocket League — same hitbox as the Fennec, tallest box, wins 50/50s, and used at every rank.

The Octane is the first car you unlock and, honestly, the one you’ll probably never need to replace. It uses the Octane hitbox — the most popular collision box in the entire game, shared with the Fennec and a handful of other bodies. If you only ever learn one car, make it this one.

Why It Works for Everyone

The Octane box is 118.0 long, 84.2 wide, and 36.2 tall. That height matters more than people think. It’s the tallest of the common hitboxes, which means you get more room to control dribbles, scoop the ball off the ground, and win 50/50 challenges against flatter cars. The rounded front also helps: in a dead-even contest for the ball, the rounded nose tends to pop it your way more often than a flat bumper does.

It’s also short. A shorter car rotates faster and feels snappier in the air, so aerial adjustments are more forgiving than on a long body like the Dominus or Breakout. That’s why the Octane is the safe pick whether you’re in Gold or pushing Supersonic Legend.

How Pros Use It

The Octane hitbox family makes up the large majority of pro loadouts. The Fennec is the single most common model at the top level because its blocky shape lines up perfectly with the box, but the Octane itself is still a tournament staple — RLCS champions have lifted trophies in it. If you’ve got thousands of hours in the Octane, there is zero reason to switch.

When You Might Want Something Else

If your game is built on aggressive ground flicks and power shots, the Dominus gives you more reach. If you want tighter visual feedback, the Fennec is the same car in a cleaner shell. But for a true all-rounder, the Octane has no real weakness.

Lock in your camera settings so the view matches the car, then just play. Understanding the hitbox system helps you appreciate why this car feels the way it does, and the rank guide shows you what’s next.
