TF2 Demoknight Guide: How to Play Demoman With a Sword

Demoknight is the highest-skill meme in TF2 — charge, crit, repeat. Here is the loadout, the charge mechanics, and how to actually win with a sword instead of a grenade launcher.

Demoknight is Demoman played with a shield and a sword instead of grenades. It looks like a joke. It plays like a berserker: you charge through the front line, crit-kill whatever you hit, and retreat before the second volley lands.

The reason it works is that a charging Demoman is hard to hit, hard to stop, and hits for 195 damage on a crit — enough to one-shot every class in the game including a fully overhealed Heavy.

The reason most Demoknights fail is that they charge into a team that is ready for them. This guide covers both sides.

The loadout

Primary: Chargin’ Targe or Splendid Screen.

  • Chargin’ Targe: Longer charge, 50% fire resistance, 30% explosive resistance. The tanky option. You take reduced damage during and after the charge, which matters when you land in a group of enemies.
  • Splendid Screen: Shorter charge, but you gain crits on the impact rather than needing a full charge. More aggressive, more fragile.

Secondary: Sticky Launcher. Do not remove it. Stickies are your only ranged option, your trap tool when the charge is on cooldown, and your sticky-jump escape.

Melee: One of the swords — Eyelander, Claidheamh Mòr, Persian Persuader, or Half-Zatoichi. The Eyelander is the classic: each kill adds health and speed, stacking up to four heads. The Persian Persuader refunds charge on kill, which gives you near-constant charges in a fight.

How the charge works

Press the melee attack button (or your charge bind) to launch forward at high speed. While charging:

  • You deal mini-crit damage on impact for a partial charge and full crit for a full charge
  • You cannot turn — the direction is locked the moment you start
  • You take reduced damage while charging
  • The charge ends on impact, on cooldown, or when you release

The critical detail everyone misses: you control the charge with your mouse before it starts. Once you are charging, the only input that matters is jump (to end it early) and mouse movement after it ends.

The three rules of charging

1. Charge from an angle, not from the front. A team that sees you coming shoots you before you arrive. Approach from a side route, from behind cover, or from above. The charge is an ambush tool, not an engagement tool.

2. Charge one target, not a group. A crit kills one player. Two players shooting you kill you first. Pick the Medic, the Sniper, or the Engineer — the player whose death breaks the enemy team’s spine.

3. Know your exit before you start. After the charge ends, you are in the middle of the enemy team with a sword and a sticky launcher. The best exit is the route you came from. The second-best is a sticky jump. The worst is trying to melee your way out.

Fighting each class as Demoknight

Scout: He outruns you and out-damages you at close range. Charge him when he is distracted, or trap him with stickies. Losing a trade to a Scout is normal — do not chase.

Soldier: You have the advantage if you bait his rocket. Charge when his rockets are on cooldown, or charge from a side where he cannot hit you. His shotgun hurts, so do not extend the fight after the charge.

Pyro: Your hardest matchup. Airblast stops your charge dead, and reflected stickies kill you. Charge from behind, and never stickies-spam at his front.

Heavy: A full-charge crit one-shots him, including an overhealed one. He is slow and cannot escape. This is your best target — if you can reach him, he dies.

Engineer: His Sentry kills you mid-charge. Destroy it from range with stickies first, then charge the Engineer. A wrangled Sentry is not worth your life.

Medic: The best target in the game. He is slow, he is always distracted, and killing him before his pocket reacts wins the fight. Charge him from the side.

Sniper: Charge from a flank. A bodyshot at your charging body does not stop you, and a crit sword kills him before he can scope again.

Spy: He will try to stab you while you charge. Charge through him — the crit impact kills him before the backstab animation completes, most of the time. If you miss, turn around and swing.

Another Demoknight: The mirror match is decided by who charges first and who lands the crit. Charge at an angle so his impact misses you, or wait for his charge to end.

The stickies are not optional

The difference between a Demoknight and a man with a sword is sticky traps. When your charge is on cooldown:

  • Trap the health pack you plan to retreat through
  • Trap the doorway the enemy team is pushing
  • Sticky jump to angles they do not expect

A Demoknight with no stickies is a Scout with less speed and more health. Use them.

The one thing to remember

Demoknight wins with timing, not aggression. Wait for the right target on the right angle, charge once, crit once, leave. The Demoknights who look unstoppable are not charging more often than you — they are charging better than you.
