How to Beat Demoman in TF2: Grenades and Sticky Traps

Demoman kills you from corners you cannot see and traps you with stickies you cannot avoid. Here is how to beat Demoman with every TF2 class.

Demoman is the most frustrating class to fight badly. He does not aim at you — he aims at the ground, the wall, or the doorway, and the explosion finds you anyway. His sticky launcher covers chokepoints with traps that detonate before you can react.

Beating Demoman is about refusing to play his game. He wants you at mid-range, walking predictably, through the chokepoint he already trapped. Deny him all three and he is just a slow man with a bottle.

The universal rules

1. Fight at close range. Both his weapons are weakest up close. Grenades have a minimum blast radius where they cannot hurt you, and stickies need distance to arm. A Demoman who lets you reach him is usually dead.

2. Do not walk into predictable spaces. Doorways, the space around the objective, and health pack locations are where stickies live. Approach from unexpected angles and change your path mid-run.

3. Listen for the arming sound. Stickybombs make a distinct beep when they arm. If you hear it near you, stop moving immediately and look around — walking into an armed trap is how Demomen farm kills.

4. Watch for the charge. The Shield charge closes distance fast and pushes you back. Sidestep it — the charge follows a straight line and a Demoman who whiffs it is vulnerable for a full second.

Class by class

Scout: Your speed is the answer. Grenades are easy to dodge if you keep moving unpredictably, and a Demoman cannot track you with pills. Circle-strafe at close range where his grenades self-damage him, and when he charges with the shield, jump over it and punish the recovery. Never let him control the engagement distance — always close.

Soldier: You out-damage him at mid-range if you can survive the first grenade. Rocket jump over his traps instead of walking through them, and fire at his position rather than trading pills. His health is lower than yours, so two direct rockets end him. The fight is decided by who shoots first from the right angle.

Pyro: Reflect his grenades and stickies back at him — both are reflected as critical projectiles that kill instantly. Even without reflects, flames close the distance and afterburn punishes his slow retreat. When he charges, airblast pushes him off course and you walk up to a free kill. Demoman is one of Pyro’s best matchups.

Heavy: At mid-range with the gun spun, you out-DPS him badly. The danger is his grenades landing at your feet, so strafe constantly while firing and use your health pool to absorb the pills that connect. Never walk into a trapped doorway — make him come to you.

Sniper: He dies to one headshot and he is slow. Stay at long range, stay scoped, and be aware that good Demomen can lob grenades at common sniper spots. Change position after every shot.

Spy: Demoman is a strong backstab target — slow, focused forward, often staring at his own traps. Decloak behind him when his team is not looking. Watch for the razorback if he wears one: hit him with the Ambassador or your revolver first, then finish with the knife.

Engineer: Your Sentry shreds his pills before they reach it, and he has no easy way to remove it without taking damage. Stickies cannot destroy a level 3 Sentry quickly, so the longer he tries, the more your team arrives. Fight him with the Pistol at mid-range — his grenades are slow and telegraphed.

Medic: Stay mobile and never solo-fight. A pocketed Heavy or Pyro beats him outright. If you are alone, use the syringe gun’s projectile arc to hit him from cover and rely on your team to finish — a Demoman who has spent his stickies on you has nothing left for the rest of your team.

The one thing to remember

Demoman controls space, not duels. Break his control: close the distance, take new angles, and punish every sticky trap with aggression instead of hesitation. A Demoman who has to aim his grenades directly at a moving target is a bad Demoman.
