TF2 Demoman Guide: Grenades, Stickies, and Demoknight Basics
How to play Demoman in Team Fortress 2 — grenade arcs, sticky traps, sticky jumping, positioning, and the Demoknight playstyle. A complete guide for new and intermediate Demos.
Demoman is the highest-ceiling class in TF2. His two launchers both fire slow, arcing projectiles, which means every shot is a prediction. Learn to predict well and you control the map. Learn badly and you kill yourself with your own explosives.
This guide covers the fundamentals that matter: grenade arcs, sticky traps, positioning, and the separate Demoknight playstyle.
What Demoman does
Demoman is the defense-breaking class. Grenades arc over cover and hit enemies hiding behind walls. Stickybombs cover chokepoints, deny ground, and destroy buildings. He is the answer to a turtling Engineer and the fastest way to clear a point.
His weakness is close range. Grenades and stickies are both hard to fire at a Scout who is already in your face, and Demoman dies fast once someone closes the distance.
The Grenade Launcher
The Grenade Launcher fires bombs that bounce and roll. They do not explode on contact unless you hit a direct impact — they explode on a timer, roughly one and a half seconds after firing.
That delay is the whole skill. You are not aiming at where the enemy is. You are aiming at where the enemy will be when the grenade arrives.
How to learn it:
Start with flat ground. On flat ground, grenades fire almost straight. Fire at enemies at mid-range and watch how far they travel before landing. Learn the timing.
Then use the arc. Aim higher for more distance. The trajectory is fixed; you choose your range by choosing the angle of your shot.
Aim at feet and walls. A grenade that lands at someone’s feet is a hit even if it rolls a bit. A grenade that hits a wall near an enemy bounces and can still catch them.
Use rollers. Grenades that roll along the ground slide under enemies and into corridors. On maps with flat floors, rollers are one of the strongest tools in the game.
The Stickybomb Launcher
Stickies are the other half of Demoman, and they are more versatile than grenades. They stick to walls and floors, and you detonate them with the fire button (not the alternate fire — check your bindings, it varies).
The core uses:
Traps. Place three or four stickies around a corner or on a health pack. When an enemy walks into them, detonate. This is the most common sticky use, and it wins fights without a direct hit.
Area denial. Stickies on the point or in a chokepoint force enemies to either destroy them (exposing themselves) or take another route.
Sticky jumping. Place a sticky at your feet, jump, and detonate as you leave the ground. This is faster and higher than rocket jumping, and it costs less health. It takes practice to time.
Building destruction. Stickies do massive building damage. A level 3 Sentry takes several well-placed stickies, and you can place them from around a corner.
The trap technique takes the longest to learn and pays off the most. Set stickies in places enemies walk through, not where they currently stand.
Positioning
Demoman fights from mid to long range with cover. He is not a front-line class, despite his health pool being decent.
Spam from cover. Fire grenades around corners and over walls without exposing yourself. You do not need to see the enemy to hit them if you know the common angles.
Keep a sticky escape. Before a fight, place a sticky near your feet. If a Scout rushes you, jump and detonate.
Stay behind your team. Demoman behind a Heavy and a Medic is devastating. Demoman alone is a free kill for any flanker.
Demoknight
The Demoknight playstyle uses the Chargin’ Targe and a melee weapon — usually the Eyelander or the Claidheamh Mòr. You give up the Grenade Launcher entirely and charge enemies with a sword.
The loop is: charge into enemies, crit with every melee kill (the Eyelander’s head-for-head mechanic), and stay mobile. Demoknights are melee-only Demos with high health from shield charge resistances.
It is a genuinely different class. It is also the hardest Demoman playstyle to learn, because you have to judge charge distances and survive focus fire. Do not start here. Learn grenades first, then experiment with Demoknight once you understand the maps.
Matchups
Versus Engineer: You hard-counter him. Grenades and stickies both destroy buildings. Stay outside Sentry range and spam.
Versus Heavy: Sticky traps win this fight. Do not trade grenades in the open — Heavy out-damages you. Trap corners he walks through.
Versus Scout: Your worst matchup. Keep distance, place sticky traps, and do not let him close. If a Scout is on you, sticky jump away or hope a teammate helps.
Versus Soldier: Roughly even. Whoever uses cover better wins. His rockets out-damage your grenades in a straight trade.
Versus Spy: Check your back. Demoman is a common Spy target because he is focused on aiming. If you hear a decloak, turn around.
Loadout recommendations
- Primary: Grenade Launcher. Learn it before anything else. The Loch-n-Load fires faster, straighter grenades that do not roll — useful, but it teaches you a different skill.
- Secondary: Stickybomb Launcher. Non-negotiable. The Scottish Resistance lets you control more stickies at once, which is powerful but overwhelming for new players.
- Melee: Bottle to start. The Eyelander is for Demoknight; the Claidheamh Mòr gives extra charge distance with the shield.
Stick to stock both launchers until your arcs are consistent. The unlockables all change the physics, and bad habits are hard to unlearn.
What to practice
Demoman is the class that rewards deliberate practice most.
- Arc training: On a private server, fire grenades at a wall from the same spot until you can hit a target marker consistently.
- Sticky timing: Practice placing and detonating traps without looking down.
- Sticky jumping: Learn it early. It is your escape and your mobility, and it gets easier with muscle memory.
Expect to be bad for a while. Every Demoman main was. The payoff is a class that controls maps in a way no other class can.
