How to Destroy a Sentry Nest in TF2 (Engineer Counter Guide)
The enemy Engineer has a level 3 Sentry and your team keeps feeding into it. Here is how to break a nest with every class — UberCharges, spam angles, and Spy plays.
A level 3 Sentry Gun with an Engineer behind it is the strongest defensive unit in TF2. It shoots rockets, has more health than three players combined, and punishes any team that tries to walk in one at a time.
Breaking a nest is a team job. Here is how each class contributes.
Why direct attacks fail
Before the solutions, understand the problem:
- The Sentry out-damages anything solo. A Soldier firing from range loses the trade — the Sentry out-ranges and out-damages him.
- It shoots rockets. At level 3, it fires homing rockets, so dodging does not work at mid-range.
- The Engineer repairs it. Even when you deal damage, he wrenches it back. You have to out-damage his repair rate.
- It has eyes. The Engineer’s own shotgun and pistol cover the angles the Sentry cannot.
The answer is never “more players walking in.” The answer is combining pressure.
The class-by-class breakdown
Demoman: the nest breaker. Grenades arc over cover and destroy buildings from angles the Sentry cannot reach. Stickybombs do the same from farther away. A single Demoman can solo a nest if he is patient: spam grenades from cover until the Sentry dies, then deal with the Engineer. If your team has one problem you cannot solve, it is usually a missing Demoman.
Soldier: the second answer. Rockets do building damage, and you can fire from behind cover where the Sentry cannot track you. Take two or three shots, retreat, repeat. Do not stand in the open trading — you lose.
Spy: the cleanest answer. Sap the Sentry, then kill the Engineer while it is disabled, then sap the Dispenser and Teleporters. A single Spy who gets in ends the nest. The hard part is getting there — watch for the Engineer’s teammates, and decloak out of sightlines.
Pyro: the closer. The airblast reflects Sentry rockets, so you can approach while deflecting its fire. At close range, the flamethrower destroys the Sentry faster than it can kill you. This is risky but genuinely works, especially from an unexpected angle.
Heavy: the pocket answer. A Heavy with a Medic out-damages a Sentry in a straight trade. Push together, focus the Sentry, and let the Medic’s healing out-pace the Engineer’s wrench. This is the most common casual solution and it works.
Scout: the distractor. You cannot kill a level 3 Sentry alone, but you can dodge its fire with the double jump and force it to track you while your team hits it. Bonk! Atomic Punch lets you run straight in and survive long enough to waste its rockets.
Sniper: the harassment. You cannot out-damage the Sentry from its range, but you can shoot the Engineer. A dead Engineer means the Sentry stops getting repaired, and an unrepaired Sentry dies to anyone.
Medic: the key. ÜberCharge turns a failing push into a winning one. Pop it when your Heavy is committed, not before. An UberCharged Heavy walks through a level 3 Sentry and survives.
Engineer: Your own Sentry shoots the enemy nest. If you can build a level 3 in a position with line of sight to their Sentry, the two buildings will duel each other. This is slow but effective on defensive maps where both teams have an Engineer.
The combination that always works
If you are losing to a nest, this sequence wins:
- Medic builds ÜberCharge.
- Heavy pushes with the Medic behind him.
- Medic pops Über as they enter Sentry range.
- Demoman or Soldier fires from a second angle.
Four players, one coordinated push, nest gone. The reason teams fail is that they send players one at a time — that is what the Sentry is designed to kill.
Breaking the Engineer’s support
The nest is not just the Sentry:
- Kill the Dispenser first if you can. It supplies the Engineer’s metal and heals him. Without it, he runs dry during the fight.
- Watch the Teleporters. On defense maps, a nest near a teleporter exit keeps the front line alive. Cutting the teleporter cuts the nest’s value even if the Sentry survives.
- Punish the Engineer personally. He is a 125-health class with a shotgun. If you can reach him, he dies fast. Spy and flanking Scouts exist for exactly this.
When to stop trying
If the nest is unbreakable with your team’s composition, stop feeding. Switch classes — get a Demoman or a Spy — or wait for your Medic’s ÜberCharge. Feeding the nest helps the Engineer level it faster and demoralizes your team.
The nest is strong. It is not invincible. It just requires the team to attack it together, which is the thing Casual teams do least.
