How to Beat Medic in TF2: Kill the Chain, Not the Man

A pocketed Heavy cannot be killed frontally. Here is how to beat Medic in TF2 — burst damage, focus fire, and the picks that break an Uber charge.

You do not lose fights to the Medic. You lose fights to the Heavy, Soldier, or Demoman he is healing. That distinction is the whole game: the Medic himself is fragile, slow, and helpless alone, but the player he pocketed is nearly unkillable while the chain stays connected.

Every strategy against Medic comes down to one idea: break the connection between him and his patient, and the patient dies in the next two seconds.

The universal rules

1. Focus the Medic, not the pocket. A full-health Heavy with a Medic has 450 effective health. The Medic behind him has 150. The math is not subtle — shoot the smaller target and the bigger one stops being a problem.

2. Use burst damage. Sustained damage gets out-healed. A critical rocket, a headshot, or a sticky trap deletes the Medic before the heal rate matters. Plan for one big hit, not a long trade.

3. Attack from unexpected angles. Medics pocket players who face forward. A Scout who arrives from the side, a Spy who decloaks behind, or a Soldier who rockets from above all bypass the patient’s protection entirely.

4. Track the Uber. When the Medic pops an uber, your goal changes from killing to surviving. Back off, wait out the eight seconds, and re-engage the moment it ends — that window is when the whole push dies.

Class by class

Scout: You are the Medic’s worst nightmare because you arrive too fast to react to. Circle-strafe around the patient, ignore him completely, and shoot the Medic. Two Scattergun shots at close range is a kill before the patient can turn. The Force-A-Nature knockback also breaks the heal beam’s connection if you hit the Medic with it.

Soldier: A direct rocket to the Medic’s body is a kill. Jump to the side of the pocket where the patient cannot hit you, fire at the Medic, and rocket jump away. Never trade rockets with the pocket frontally — you are fighting two players at once and only one of them is the correct target.

Pyro: Ambush the pair from behind. Your flames damage both at once, and the afterburn on the Medic continues after he runs. If he pops an uber, back off — an ubered Heavy plus Pyro flames is a losing trade — and re-engage after it expires. The compression blast also separates a Medic from his patient at close range.

Demoman: Sticky traps are the strongest anti-Medic tool in the game because they kill regardless of aim. Trap the area the pair is pushing through and detonate when the Medic walks in. Grenades work too: lob them over the patient’s head at the Medic’s position, where the splash catches both.

Sniper: A fully charged bodyshot kills the Medic instantly, and a headshot kills most pockets. The problem is his patient shooting back, so take the shot when the patient is distracted or reloading, then change position. Never stay scoped on the same angle after firing — a Medic who knows where you are tells his pocket exactly where to aim.

Spy: The classic pick. Decloak behind the pair, stab the Medic, and the pocket is now alone. Watch for the patient turning around — if you are spotted, the Ambassador headshot is your backup. Time your approach after the patient fires, because that is when nobody is looking behind them.

Engineer: Your Sentry kills the patient while your team focuses the Medic. When an uber comes, the wrangled Sentry still dies, so accept that the building is lost and instead position yourself to kill the Medic after the push runs out of charge. Your Pistol finishes fleeing Medics at mid-range.

Medic: Mirror matchups come down to who ubered first and who aimed better. If you have the charge, pop it on your pocket and win the trade. If you do not, break line of sight and retreat — a Medic fighting a Medic is a fight the healer with more health wins, and that is a bad bet.

The one thing to remember

Stop trying to out-damage the heal. Burst the Medic from an angle the pocket cannot cover, and an unkillable duo becomes two separate easy kills. The moment you start shooting the pocket frontally, you have already lost the fight.
