TF2 Kritzkrieg Guide: When Crits Beat the Standard Uber
The Kritzkrieg trades invulnerability for crit-boosted damage. Here is when it wins pushes, how to build it faster, and why good Medics carry both medi guns.
The Kritzkrieg is the Medi Gun that every new Medic discovers late and every experienced Medic keeps equipped. It does not make you invulnerable — it makes your patient invulnerable and fires crits, which means the push ends faster and the enemy team dies before their own ults go off.
The trade is that you cannot survive a defensive standoff with it. This guide covers when the crits matter and when the standard uber is the only correct choice.
What the Kritzkrieg actually does
The uber charge: Your patient becomes invulnerable to damage and deals critical hits for eight seconds, same duration as the standard Medi Gun.
The build rate: The Kritzkrieg builds charge 25% faster than the standard Medi Gun. Over the course of a match, that is roughly one extra uber per minute of active healing.
The vulnerability: Your patient takes no reduced damage from afterburn, and cannot be healed through a Kritzkrieg uber — the heal beam stops during the charge. A Kritzkrieg push that gets slowed dies.
When the crits win
Against a single pocket. The standard uber wins a standoff: both teams uber, both survive, and the fight resets. The Kritzkrieg ends it: your pocketed Heavy deletes their pocket before their Medic can react. Crits are for killing, not trading.
Against a clumped enemy team. Crit rockets and crit minigun bullets splash and spread. Five enemies standing together die to a crit Heavy in about three seconds. The same five enemies survive a standard uber long enough to kill you.
When you have the uber advantage. If your team ults first, the Kritzkrieg converts the timing advantage into a won fight. If you are behind on charge, the standard uber’s defensive strength matters more.
On attack. Pushing last with a Kritzkrieg is stronger than pushing last with a standard uber, because the crits kill the defense before the respawn timer resets.
When the standard uber wins
Defense. Holding a point is about surviving, not killing. The standard uber keeps your patient alive through the enemy’s entire push, which is what a defensive Medic needs.
When your team is down players. A 4v5 push needs the patient to survive everything. Crits do not help if your Heavy dies mid-uber to three enemies.
Against a Kritzkrieg. Mirror matchups are decided by who ults second. If they have a Kritzkrieg and you have a standard, pop after them — their crits expire while you are still invulnerable.
When your pocket is not a Heavy or Soldier. Crits scale with the weapon’s damage per shot. A crit Scattergun kills, a crit Syringe Gun does not do much. Run the standard uber for pockets that do not benefit.
How to play the Kritzkrieg
Heal aggressively to build faster. The 25% build bonus compounds with the Ubersaw. A Medic healing a Heavy who is taking damage builds the Kritzkrieg in well under a minute.
Communicate the charge. Your patient needs to know when the uber is ready, and your team needs to know when the push starts. A crit uber used alone is wasted.
Pop early, not late. The crits are strongest when the enemy team is clumped and not expecting it. Waiting for the “perfect” moment usually means the enemy team scatters first.
Have an exit. If the push stalls, your patient is vulnerable. Back off together — a Kritzkrieg patient who overstays is a corpse.
The loadout that pairs with it
Ubersaw. The 25% charge per hit is the single largest build-rate increase available, and the Kritzkrieg’s faster build rate multiplies it. This is the only correct melee.
Syringe Gun or Blutsauger. The Blutsauger’s self-heal on hit helps you survive when your patient is under pressure, but the Syringe Gun’s needle arc hits at ranges where enemies cannot reach you. Pick based on whether you expect to be taking damage.
Kritzkrieg over Quick-Fix. The Quick-Fix’s mirror-uber is a specific strategy for pushing through a defensive hold. The Kritzkrieg is the better default uber.
The one thing to remember
The Kritzkrieg is an offensive weapon. Equip it when your team is pushing, your pocket is a Heavy or Soldier, and you have the uber advantage. Equip the standard Medi Gun when you are defending, behind on charge, or down players — and never be afraid to switch between them mid-map.
