TF2 Market Gardener Guide: The Trolldier Crit, Step by Step
The Market Gardener crits only while you are airborne and falling — land and the crit is gone. Here is the exact crit rule, the Rocket Jumper + Mantreads trolldier loadout with real stats, the JUMP+CROUCH+FIRE rocket jump, and every matchup that matters.
The Market Gardener is a melee reskin of the Shovel, but with one line that changes everything: it deals a critical hit when the wielder is rocket jumping — specifically while you are airborne and falling. The instant you touch the ground, the crit condition is gone. A crit shovel one-shots every class, including a 450-health overhealed Heavy. That single rule is the entire weapon.
It also has no random crits and swings 20% slower than the stock Shovel. Miss a swing and you are committed — you cannot cancel into the shotgun in time.
The trolldier loadout (the only way to use it)
To actually reach the falling state without dying, you pair it with mobility gear:
- Rocket Jumper (primary): deals zero damage to enemies and zero self-damage. That is the point — you can fire rockets at your own feet all day and never visit a respawn locker. It carries 200% max primary ammo and has no random crits. You sacrifice your only damage dealer for pure mobility.
- Mantreads (secondary): 75% less knockback taken, 3× falling damage to whoever you land on (this is your kill — stomp a Sniper’s head), 75% less airblast vulnerability, and 200% air control while blast-jumping.
- Market Gardener (melee): the crit shovel.
This trio is the classic “Trolldier.” A common variant swaps Mantreads for a Shotgun if you want a reliable damage backup, or runs Gunboats (–60% rocket-jump blast damage) if you insist on a real Rocket Launcher instead of the Jumper. Gunboats let you rocket jump and fight; the Jumper lets you jump better but you hit like a foam bat.
The Rocket Jumper itself is free: finish 11 Soldier achievements and it unlocks, or grab it as a random drop, or trade one scrap for it. Hightower is the canonical trolldier map — open sky, lots of verticality.
The rocket jump you must master first
The Market Gardener is worthless if your jump is sloppy. The basic jump:
- Look down at roughly a 45-degree angle (behind you, at the ground).
- JUMP + CROUCH + FIRE, in quick succession. Holding crouch in the air reduces air friction so you fly farther.
- In the air, aim your descent at the target’s head. The crit only lands on the way down, so your whole approach is “get above them, fall on them.”
- Swing as you fall. If you swing after you land, it is a normal (non-crit) hit and you have wasted the jump.
Practice on tr_walkway_rc2 or any jump_ map until the timing is automatic. The horizontal approach (jump in from the side so you arrive in peripheral vision) is harder to react to than the straight-up drop.
The swings that work
- Direct drop: jump straight up next to a stationary target, swing down. Easy to read — experienced players hear the jump and step aside.
- Horizontal approach: rocket in from an angle where their screen does not show you. Arrives from the edge of vision.
- Escape swing: take a bad fight, rocket away, and crit the player who chased you. Soldiers who chase a falling Gardener get shoveled in the back of the head.
Matchups that decide whether to equip it
- Medic pocket: the best use. Rocket over the pocket’s head and crit the Medic on the way down — the pocket cannot protect a Medic hit from directly above.
- Heavy: one crit kills him, overheal included. Come from directly overhead or behind so his minigun cannot track.
- Pyro: the worst matchup. He airblasts you out of your descent and the crit never lands. Jump from behind, or do not jump.
- Sniper: free meal — but a good Sniper will pre-aim the airborne Soldier. Pick your moments.
- Scout: he out-runs your arc. Only the escape swing works, and only if he chases predictably.
When to leave it on the shelf
Do not equip it if you are still learning to rocket jump (use the stock Shovel), if the enemy has a sharp Sniper who punishes air, or if you are below half health — you cannot jump and survive the landing. It is banned in competitive for a reason: it trades all your utility for a coin-flip aerial kill.
The one thing to remember
The Market Gardener is a rocket jump with a kill bolted to the end: airborne and falling = crit, grounded = nothing. Pair it with the Rocket Jumper and Mantreads, master JUMP+CROUCH+FIRE, and only swing on the descent. Everything else is decoration.
