How to Beat Soldier in TF2: Rocket Spam, Solved

Soldier rockets are everywhere and you keep dying to splash. Here is how to beat Soldier with every TF2 class — angles, timing, and the reflect that ends him.

Soldier is the class that kills you from angles you did not check, at ranges where your weapon cannot answer back, and he can leave the fight entirely with a rocket jump whenever he starts losing.

The way to beat Soldier is to understand what makes him strong: splash damage. He does not have to hit you directly. Every rocket that lands near you still hurts. That means trading hits is a losing game — you need to remove his options instead of out-shooting him.

The universal rules

1. Take the fight somewhere he cannot rocket jump out of. Indoors, tight corridors, and enclosed rooms all break his escape. Soldiers lose their biggest advantage the moment they feel trapped.

2. Never stand still at mid-range. A rocket aimed at your feet is a guaranteed hit on a stationary target. Constant small movements make his prediction miss.

3. Use hard cover, not soft cover. A wooden crate does not stop splash. A concrete wall or the corner of a building does. Soldiers pre-aim at common cover positions, so only step out when you have a plan.

4. Count his rockets. A Soldier carries three rockets. If he has fired twice recently, he has one left before a reload — that reload is your window to push.

Class by class

Scout: Your best matchup. Your speed breaks his tracking, and you out-damage him at close range. Circle-strafe so his rockets miss, then close the distance. A double jump over his rocket can bring you on top of him, where two Scattergun shots end the fight. Do not let him kite you — always be moving toward him, never in a straight line.

Pyro: The hard counter. Airblast reflects his rockets back at him, and a reflected rocket comes back as a critical hit that kills him instantly. Wait for his shot, reflect it, and the fight is over. Even without the reflect, your flames out-damage him up close, and afterburn punishes every attempt to run.

Demoman: Outrange him. Your grenades fire in an arc that drops onto him from above, where he cannot see them coming. Fight from elevated positions or behind cover, and never trade rockets at mid-range — his splash is bigger. Sticky traps punish rocket jumps: he has very little control mid-air, so a trap on his landing spot is a free kill.

Heavy: You win the mid-range duel if the minigun is spinning before he rounds the corner. Spin up early, peek the corner while firing, and back off when he jumps. His rocket at your feet does real damage, so strafe while firing and use your 300 health to absorb the one rocket that connects.

Sniper: Kill him before he knows you exist. Soldiers walk in straight lines while aiming, so a bodyshot at long range is often enough. Stay far away, stay scoped, and never let him get to a corner where he can rocket-jump above your sightline.

Spy: Soldier is a classic backstab target because he is slow and focused forward. Approach from behind while he is shooting or distracted by a teleporter. Watch for the equestrian — if he turns around, decloak is your only option, so pick the moment when his team is busy.

Engineer: Your Sentry does the work. Soldiers must either destroy it from range (giving your team time) or jump it (usually dying in the process). If he engages you directly, the Pistol and your wrench hits out-damage his shotgun, and your Dispenser keeps you topped off.

Medic: You cannot beat Soldier alone, but you beat him by existing. A pocketed Heavy or Scout shreds him. When he rockets your pocket, stay behind cover — your job is to survive so your damage class can win the fight that follows.

The one thing to remember

Soldier dies to the same way every time: remove his angles and his escape. Fight him where he cannot jump, move so his rockets miss, and punish the reload. Do not trade splash damage — you will lose every trade.
