Lost Ark Karma System Guide — Ranks, Levels, and Upgrade Priorities

Lost Ark Karma system explained: the three skill trees, how Ranks and Levels work, where Shadow of Karma and Destiny Stones come from, and what to upgrade first.

Karma is the long-term power system that arrived with Kazeros Raid: Act 2, and most endgame characters have at least started it. It’s simple on paper — advance three skill trees for combat stats and Ark Passive effects — but the material economy punishes careless spending. Here’s how it works and where to put your resources.

What Karma does

Karma only applies when Ark Passive is turned on. Once unlocked, you get three skill trees:

  • Evolution — raw power. Levels increase Max HP; Ranks increase Evolution-type damage and Brand Power.
  • Enlightenment — your build identity. Levels increase Weapon Power; Ranks grant Enlightenment Points, which can unlock or strengthen class nodes.
  • Leap — Hyper Awakening. Levels increase Hyper Awakening skill damage; Ranks grant Leap Points.

Each tree runs from Rank 1 to Rank 6, with five Levels per Rank (30 Levels total). Unlocking costs gold and Shadow of Karma and starts you at Rank 1 / Level 1 on all trees.

How progression works

  • Ranks advance automatically once you have the materials — gold plus Shadow of Karma.
  • Levels are attempted upgrades: gold plus Destiny Stones, each attempt has a success chance, and failed attempts build Karma Energy (same artisan-energy concept as honing) until the level is guaranteed.

That safety net matters: you never truly lose Destiny Stones to RNG, but a dry streak still delays your next breakpoint.

Where the materials come from

  • Shadow of Karma — Kazeros Raid: Act 2 (Normal 1670 / Hard 1690) and the raid exchange structure. It feeds unlocking and Rank progression.
  • Destiny Stones — Tier 4 content that used to hand out Chaos Stones now provides these instead: Act 2, Field Boss Sevek Atun, and related weeklies.
  • Gold — both paths, and character-bound gold is consumed first when a system accepts both types, so budget it per character.

Upgrade priorities

There’s no universal order, but a framework that works for most characters:

  1. Unlock the tree that supports your active build. Don’t open all three immediately. Damage dealers usually compare Evolution Rank (Brand Power), Enlightenment Ranks (points for class nodes), and Leap (Hyper Awakening damage).
  2. Chase Rank breakpoints that grant points. A Rank that gives an Enlightenment or Leap point activating a stronger node beats a flat stat Level every time. If the next Rank changes nothing, Leveling is fine.
  3. Use Levels for steady stats between breakpoints — HP, Weapon Power, or Hyper Awakening damage depending on tree.
  4. Keep Leap aligned with your Hyper Awakening usage. If your build doesn’t lean on Hyper Awakening, Leap Levels are less exciting than they look.

Supports should read their own tree descriptions rather than copying a DPS priority — Brand Power, class Enlightenment effects, and Hyper Awakening value differ across roles.

How Karma fits into progression

Karma is weekly-clear-fed, not a grind-forever system. It rides with your gear track: as you push item level through the Kazeros ladder (our gear honing T4 guide covers the materials), Act 2 clears feed Karma on the side. Don’t burn Destiny Stones the moment they land — hold a reserve until you’ve decided which tree moves your build.
